Samuel Armstrong is elected mayor of Boston.

Armstrong (W) defeats John James by a margin of 3,039 to 1,185 and others. Inaugurated on January 4, 1836, his major accomplishment, according to John T. Galvin, is erecting an iron fence around Boston Common.
